How wonderful having a jumping up and down welcoming committee! Maddy had only just arrived from France and HongKong, and had apparently slept for over 12 hours. I was lucky on the Honolulu flight, sleeping for 6 hours. Makes a difference to the jetlag. I'm trying out placing photos in a different place in the blog. Let's see if it works. I think I could even get 3 in a row . . . . . . .
Taken the afternoon of 10 October 08, before heading off to the airport.
Lake Louise
It really is this gorgeous colour!
Kennicott mine, beyond the end of the McCarthy Road.
No longer used, these mine buildings have a broad sweeping view out over the Kennicott glacier, and beyond.
Wrangell St. Elias Nat. Park range.
Majestic. Only way to see it quickly is to fly over. I'm not sure which is larger; this park, or NE Greenland
As cold as Greenland?
Checking the temperature in the Arctic at Prudhoe Bay before having a barefoot paddle.
Musk oxen browsing on the Haul Road (Dalton H'way)
How about those painted cliffs behind the musk oxen! - the Franklin Bluffs. A photographer's dream, no less. Musk oxen are actually goats with long skirts.
Atigun Pass on the Denali Highway
Waiting for the next truck to spray us with snow.
A bear! A large grizzly bear in Denali
Glad we weren't too close!!
Mt Denali - or McKinley
Huge, and awe inspiring. We were very lucky to see it!
Neville, with Blackstone glacier behind
Overcast and rainy days, but mostly good views - weren't we lucky!
Mark having a Westminster Bridge hotdog
- after our visit to the Tate Gallery
Jillian, Judith, Chris and Mark
At Tolkien and C.S.Lewis' pub
Harry Lampert
At home, with Kirsty's birthday present
Scoresby Sund, Greenland
Just had to leap up on deck when I saw this out the porthole!!
Iceberg in Nordvest Fjord, Scorsebysund
We could see from a distance that this iceberg had a beautiful turquoise glass streaks in it, which meant that all the air had been squeezed out of it. Up close it looked like organ pipes and was ethereally beautiful.
Ittoqqortoomitt
'The village with big houses' - the only settlement we saw in E. Greenland. It woud be interesting to spend time here and experience the culture - and the winter! They say that getting round by dog sled is very easy going, but we weren't allowed to pet the dogs. I wonder why!
Sailing through the pack ice on the way to Greenland
Seal basking on an ice floe, near the Esmarkbreen Glacier
We came quite close, and he/she couldn't have cared less!
View from my bedroom window at Basecamp Longyearbyen - at 20 minutes after midnight!
There was only one blind, so I had to drap my sarong and shawl around the bed. Everything should have two uses - right?
Lerici
Mark & I had a memorable seafood lunch here, on Hamish & Petra's recommendation. The food started arriving, and just kept on coming! It was all beautifully cooked, delightfully arranged, and tasted gorgeous!
Riomaggiore -
this is where we left for our dive - was scarey walking down that slope with a dive tank on my back.
